Environmental Scientist/Planner

Potomac-Hudson Engineering (PHE) is an innovative environmental, planning, and technology consulting firm. PHE is currently seeking a growth-oriented individual interested in gaining diverse work experience in a collaborative work environment for a full-time Environmental Scientist/Planner position located anywhere in the contiguous United States. This position is 100% remote. Those residing within commuting distance of PHE’s headquarters in Rockville, MD, are welcome to work in the office on a flexible basis if they choose to do so.
This individual will be primarily involved in supporting NEPA documentation for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED). OCED supports strategies for advancing and deploying clean energy technologies and systems to address climate change. In addition, the candidate may also support other NEPA documentation for other federal clients such as the Department of Defense, the General Services Administration, or other DOE offices. This position requires the ability to collaborate with teams of scientists, engineers, and other PHE personnel, and the skills to effectively interact with regulatory staff and clients. The position requires some periodic out of town travel.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Preparation or review of documents related to NEPA compliance – primarily environmental assessments and environmental impact statements
Preparation or review of documents to assist with compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act, Endangered Species Act, DOE’s Floodplain and Wetland Environmental Review Requirements, and other regulations including, but not limited to the Farmland Protection Policy Act, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and the Clean Air Act.
Preparation or review of supporting environmental and technical studies.
Writing of technical reports, letters, memoranda, plans, and proposals.
Supporting various company and group strategic initiatives.
Periodic traveling for project assignments or meetings.
Minimum Requirements:
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in environmental science, geology, engineering or related field.
Relevant Experience: 2 to 8 years of experience in the areas of environmental impact analysis, natural resource studies, environmental permitting, or environmental regulations.
Communication Skills: Personable with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to work independently to solve problems.
Professional Attributes: Self-motivated and adaptable working style with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as independently. Willingness to modify personal schedules as required to meet deadlines and client needs.
Computer Proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products including Word, Excel, and other integrated software.
Work Authorization: Must have legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience preparing or reviewing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation. Experience with state equivalent NEPA programs may be considered.
Working knowledge or expertise in environmental laws and regulations, such as National Historic Preservation Act, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and other regulations and executive orders applicable to the NEPA process.
Working knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Office Products.
