April 2022 - International Joint Commission Issues Nuclear Decommissioning Report

The International Joint Commission’s Great Lakes Water Quality Board issued their final report on “Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Facilities in the Great Lakes Basin” on April 19, 2022.  The IJC summary report is the culmination of four years of work performed by the Water Quality Board’s Nuclear Decommissioning Work Group, studying the issue of aging nuclear facilities in the Great Lakes and their impacts on water quality. See Press Release.

PHE is pleased to have supported the Water Quality Board’s efforts to study this important topic.  PHE, in partnership with LimnoTech, prepared a supporting technical report “Nuclear Power Decommissioning Practices:  Case Studies and Recommendations for the Great Lakes Basin.”  The report summarizes current regulations on decommissioning of nuclear power plants and presents lessons learned from actual decommissioning case studies in North America and Europe.

Both reports can be found online. In addition, the Water Quality Board is hosting a public webinar on Friday, April 29th at 11:30 am EDT. You can register for the webinar at: https://bit.ly/GLWQB-Nuclear
